Setting Goals for 2020, and Actually Keeping Them

This is something that comes up every year, and you may or may not be excited about it, but setting goals is super important! It’s a running joke that everyone will fail their New Year’s resolutions by the end of January, and that’s a mindset you need to nip in the bud right now! It doesn’t matter how reasonable your goals are if your mindset isn’t ready to take your goals seriously.

So rather than thinking about goal setting as something you need to do each year, think of it as an opportunity to start fresh. Seriously though, that’s what it is! Each new year is a gift just for you, and the best thing to do with a gift is to accept it with open arms. Don’t sell yourself short, you’re amazing and will accomplish great things with some planning and a lot of hard work!

Making Goals and Common Mistakes

The worst type of goal you can make for yourself is one that you feel you should do. Just because you should be healthy, and maybe should exercise more, doesn’t mean that it’s a good goal for you in this moment. The word “should” holds so much judgment and negative connotation that you’re automatically setting yourself up for failure by making any “should” goals. If your heart isn’t invested in your goal, then you’re not going to have any motivation to accomplish it. And let’s be real, we want to crush our goals!

Another mistake, is making your goals way too easy! Don’t do that! Now I know, some of you may disagree with me on this, but your goals need to be challenging. There also needs to be a balance with this as your goal needs to be attainable, but not something that won’t require any effort.

For example, if your goal is to brush your teeth for a full 2 minutes each time you brush, all you need to do is set a timer for 2 minutes. This doesn’t require any real effort and therefore, won’t give you the satisfaction an accomplished goal will provide. On the other end, your goals need to be within reason. If you made $100K last year, but you want to make 2 million dollars this year, that would be highly unattainable.

I know this all sounds pretty basic, and that’s because it is. As it ought to be! Sometimes we make things that are really easy super complicated. Can we stop doing that? I genuinely believe all you have to do to achieve any goal you set for yourself is set a goal you’re passionate about, get your mindset right, plan it out (ON PAPER!), then take action! Easy-peasy!

Challenge Yourself Realistically

Shoot for the moon. If you miss it, you will still land among the stars.

Norman Vincent Peale, The Power of Positive Thinking

I love this quote because it really emphasizes the benefits of setting significant goals. If your goal is too challenging and you don’t quite accomplish it, chances are you still improved yourself from last year! Every year I set about 15-30 goals for myself. This may seem like a lot, but I take the time to write everything down and plan out how I will realistically accomplish them. Even if a few slip through the cracks along the way, I still have many other goals I’m working towards. Regardless of what I accomplish, I can end the year positively knowing I improved myself in huge ways.

If I didn’t set massive goals for myself, I wouldn’t be a Real Estate Broker in California, a Published Author, Business Owner for over a decade, or studying from my Broker’s license in Idaho for 2020. Please, friend, I can’t say it enough, don’t sell yourself short. You have something unique to offer that the world needs!

For all you entrepreneurs out there, remember to set personal goals in addition to your business goals! It’s essential to dedicate time for yourself and feed your soul. For me, when I’m making goals, I like to alternate business and personal goals. This year, I’m focusing on starting my podcast (keep an eye out for that!), but I’m also going to dedicate more time to my family. We are moving to Idaho next year, and I really want to spend quality time exploring my new home with my family. Idaho seems to have a lot to offer, and I can’t wait to see it all!

Set Yourself up for Success

When it comes down to it, your mindset is what will determine your success! If you go into 2020 with an open mind, willingness to fail, and a realistic plan of how you will accomplish your goals, you will be successful. Don’t let the fear of not achieving your goals keep you from even trying, because if you go into the year fearful of failure, you won’t move forward. So, you might as well give it your best shot, because what do you really have to lose? Nothing!
